No, that’s not the name of a blog though with all the blogs rating things. I have read quite a few, and I have discovered most are based on the author’s opinion and not on any research they did.
I have written articles rating things: Top 10 Ways to Get Rid of Stinkbugs and such for several of the clients I have via freelancing. I even got paid to write a buyer’s guide for handgun safes. These were all based on research I did, hours worth in fact, and they are actually quite useful without me needing to be an expert. They were not based on my opinion.
People who aren’t experts in the subjects they’re rating should say so at the beginning. This way others won’t take what they’re saying as fact when it’s only opinion. If they do research, they should indicate this as well.
Sharing your opinion is great and can be useful, but posting an article rating things like books when you don’t have the research to back it up is misleading and wrong. It’s an attempt to validate your own ideas and tastes while trying to pass yourself off as an expert. I find this ethically offensive and morally incorrect because it’s fraud.
Anyway, that’s my opinion. I won’t be sharing blogs that rate things unless I know for sure the author has done research and is just not trying to pass off their opinion as fact. Now, if they indicate at the beginning of their articles the list is based on their personal opinion then, I’ll consider it. I just don’t want to help perpertuate a lie or fraud.
See you on the flipside and don’t forget your towel and sonic screwdriver!
