Scrivener: Writing Program Review

Many years ago, I was one of the winners of the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) which is held every November and has participants from around the world. That year, one of the prizes for winning was a free copy of Scrivener. That was about ten years ago, when I wrote the rough draft for Crimson Knight.

I have only had to update and pay for the right to use the program three times, and the program has gotten better in many ways and in others, it needs more work.

One of the issues I’ve found with it is that you practically have to take a course to learn how to use the program. In fact, there are quite a few online classes as well as books teaching you how to use Scrivener. I didn’t have those resources so, I wasted quite a few hours learning how to do things correctly. It was a lot of trial and error, mostly error, and I am still not fully sure of what I’m doing.

That said, let’s talk about the program a bit.

What is Scrivener?

Scrivener is a program designed to help writers write. Sounds like a word processor from back in the day, but it does a great deal more than that. In addition to helping you format your work using either the presets provided or custom elements, it also:

  1. Assists with editing during the writing process by highlighting words spelled incorrectly and missing punctuation.
  2. Allows you to choose how you want to set up your project by choosing either a blank page for a custom project or choosing presets like manuscript, recipe, play, journal, etc.
  3. Saves your work as almost a dozen different formats including .docx and .pdf

Manuscript Production

This is the main reason I chose to use Scrivener many years ago. Once you decide to write a manuscript, it allows you to choose which kind: fiction or non-fiction as well as play/movie script. Then it:

a. Set up Title Page and Chapters

b. Separates Chapters into Scenes

c. Provides a Corkboard view so you can check each scene individually with ease

d. Has places for notes and research

e. Saves everything in one file so you don’t have to worry about losing your notes or forgetting where you found something.

f. Compiles the finished project according to choice: print or e-book.

My Experiences

My main issue was learning how to format and make sure all the formatting was done to the entire body of work. I have found you have to preset all the formatting vales before you start writing because if you don’t, it’s a major headache having to go back and fix everything.

Also, formatting for an e-book is much different than formatting for a print book, and you have to pay attention to the space around your text so you don’t use more than an e-book creator program will allow you to. Same with print, many self publishing programs have boundaries on the book pages you can’t put anything in because it will be damaged during the printing and cutting process.

Conclusion

Scrivener is a great program and despite all my issues learning how to use it, I don’t want to use anything else. The only error in this program that I’ve found is user error. I suggest buying a book and taking a course to learn how to use the program unless you’re hands on like me and don’t mind finding out how to use it on your own.

Don’t take my word for it, of course. Try out the program for yourself. I think there are trial versions available. If you like it, it’s well worth the price of the licensing.

If you already use the program, feel free to let me know your thought/feelings about the program. I’d love to hear from you.

Before I go, I want to remind everyone of the raffle I have going on for a few more days! If you’re new here, check out the full story at the link below:

Raffle is at Halfway!

This means you only have one week left before the raffle is done, and the winner is both chosen and announced!! For those of you who are new here, I am holding a raffle to help me pay off Mimi’s vet bills. She is recovering from a severe bout of bronchitis. I am having trouble paying the bills for her so, we’re trying to raise funds by holding a raffle.

So, what are we raffling off?? It’s a handmade crocheted accent/throw pillow in bright colors:

This lovely can be machine washed, but if you have an agitator(as most people still do), it’s best to put inside a pillow case or a lingerie bag so the fringe doesn’t get caught. It can also be dried in the dryer. It won’t shrink, fade or bleed on your clothes! The yarn is mostly acrylic, but it’s still very soft.

Tickets are 50 cents American, and if you want to be less than $5 American, you can use the custom button below to buy less. I haven’t figured out how to change things on the donation form yet so please, forgive me this time!

STEEMIT – site review

I have not been on this site long so this isn’t a definitive review. I just wanted to bring this site to your attention because more and more sites like this one are popping up. I am not sure why, but this is the current trend.

STEEMIT uses blockchain technology to store all the content added to it. People can earn STEEM, a cryptocurrency only useful on this site, and it’s sole use seems to be to allow the posters to add more content to the blockchain.

As I’ve said, I’m still new to this site. I have found that threads that claim to be English are full of posts in non-English languages and thus, I am unable to respond or add to the posts in order to earn STEEM.

It’s also not that user-friendly, and you have to dig to find anything helpful to aid you in learning how to use the site. They have an Academy, but I haven’t found much of use on there so far.

I am not sure how active I’ll end up being on this site, but I don’t want you taking my word for how the site is. I encourage you to check out the site yourself and decide on your own if you’ll use the site or not.

If you do check out the site, please share your thoughts in the comments below. Thank you!

Before I go, I’d like to remind everyone I have a raffle going to help me pay for some of Mimi’s vet bills. Please, feel free to use the custom button for buying less than $5 worth of entries. For more information check out the bottom of this post:

Writing Prompt: Descriptions

Every writer, at some point, has to describe someone or something in their work. Anne Rice wrote pages describing how a room looked, to the smallest detail. Other writers are minimalists when it comes to description, preferring to allow the reader to use their imagination. Case in point was Stephen King describing the demon in IT and not Pennywise.

For this exercise, I’d like you to describe something or someone without coming out and saying who/what they are. Let us, as the readers, try to figure it out. The description can be as long as 500 words or as short as 12 as long as they are descriptive and not cryptic! 🙂

Here is my attempt:

Standing by the water’s edge, eyes on the open water, it shone in the light of the rising sun. Tall yet sleek and powerfully built, it stood in complete stillness, waiting.

Put your answers in the comments below to see if you guess what it is!

Quick reminder I am raffling off a throw/accent pillow to help me offset the costs of Mimi’s recent vet bills – she has bronchitis but is on the mend. Each entry is 50 cents American. For more information, check out the original post:

YouTube Tuesdays: Jen’s Kreative Kreations

This week, I want to share the channel of a fantastically gifted visual artist named Jen. She does all kinds of wonderful creations from watercolor paintings to journals and so much more! As a fellow Texan, I am delighted to share her work with all of you, and I hope you like her as much as I do!

I am in love with this beautiful reminder of more innocent times when Pooh and his friends were a big part of my life and that of my youngest son. So many sweet memories tied up with these fellows. I always related best to Eeyore myself.

After you’ve watched this video, you should check out her other videos! She has a lot of eye candy to delight most members of your family and keep you on YT for hours, if not days!!!

If you like any of her work let her know by commenting on the video you like and subscribing to her channel. I know she’d appreciate the feedback!
